Writing well comes to down to holding the reader’s attention.

  • Make sentences flow from one to another, make sure the reader is never surprised, anticipate objections
  • Edit, and edit again. Remove all fluff. Use short sentences. Read your own writing with a “red pen”
  • Delete anything that makes you pause and go back and look around for clues.
  • Practice writing. Make your own opportunities to write by putting your name on it… “You can have an unreasonable amount of influence by being the person who writes stuff down”.
  • Writing well starts with writing stuff down.

Couple of points from CS Lewis advice on writing, I liked:

  1. Write with the ear, not the eye
  2. Write what interests you
  3. Don’t use words (or phrases, or sentences, or paragraphs) you don’t understand — say no to Copy-Pasting.
